For decades ice cream has been a favourite pudding, but now an ice cream flavoured with mustard is set to create excitement at dinner parties when it debuts at a UK supermarket.
The mustard ice cream, part of the expanded Heston from Waitrose range, follows the success of savoury ice-creams and sorbets in fine-dining restaurants.
It contains a combination of Pommery grain mustard and sugar that together give it a sweet and hot flavour.
The mustard dessert will appear alongside sweet desserts in the Waitrose ice-cream aisles. But this experimental new recipe is more likely to be dished up with cold meats and chilled soups than with a chocolate flake.
Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal’s most famous savoury ice cream was his now classic smoked bacon and egg ice cream cooked with liquid nitrogen.
Other top-notch restaurants have wowed customers with ice creams and sorbets flavoured with everything from Parmesan cheese to basil.
Heston said: “This is the first ever commercially available savoury ice cream. It’s both sweet and savoury at the same time! It is brilliant served with chilled soups like gazpacho, cold meats, smoked fish, hot or cold ham and tomato salads”
Icecream buyer, Vanessa Stephenson said: “It has actually got quite a sweet flavour and if you like mustard then you could have it as a dessert. Heston’s expertise shows that this is a fantastic flavour combination. It is all about being creative with food.”
Other mouth-watering new ice creams in the Heston from Waitrose range include Salted Caramel Popcorn that combines two favourite cinema flavours.
Chocolate & Rosemary ice cream is also making its debut. It is a marriage of rich dark chocolate with the green notes of rosemary.
Meanwhile sweet-toothed shoppers can also opt for the new Heston from Waitrose frozen biscuit dough.
These sweet treats simply need taking out of the freezer and baking in the oven for 20 minutes to create freshly baked biscuits. The biscuits are available in three delicious flavours: Olive Oil & Vanilla; Chocolate with Caraway; and Almond & Marzipan.
